Background

NAME: Fabrice Georges Coombs. He is a first-cousin of Moira Coombs.
CHARACTER AGE: 26
BACKGROUND/HISTORY: Fabrice Georges Coombs is the male half of Reginald and Sarah Coombs’ set of twins, older than his sister Cecila by a whole three minutes. A fact he greatly enjoys rubbing in Cecilia’s face when he wants to annoy her. Though both parents are powerful witches, they each possessed defining traits that put them on the outs with the rest of the Coombs family. Fabrices’ father was a fisherman, much to the shame of his older sister, Violet, who had hopes of her younger brother in politics, with perhaps making it to the position of mayor one day.

Reginald was always suspicious of Violet, and he worried for her children as well as his own, though he never voiced his suspicions to anyone but Sarah, who wholeheartedly agreed with him, when they were alone. Fabrice and Cecilia lost their father at the age of five years old to a tragic sea accident, very much like the one that occurred years later to Moira’s father. His mother, a veterinarian at the local zoo, never remarried, believing her husband to be the only love of her life.

Sarah raised Fabrice and Cecilia on her own, not an easy task, to say the least. Thankfully, she had a steady job and could provide them with a comfortable lifestyle in the same house they lived in with Reginald. However, Sarah’s adeptness at her job, along with her specialty in animal magic, meant that she was constantly in demand, leaving Fabrice and Cecilia alone with nannies and at daycare centers while she worked. When the twins reached fifth grade, Cecilia went off to boarding school for gifted students while Fabrice remained in Siren Cove. Despite the distance between them, the twins remained as close as ever, constantly writing to each other and communicating through the magical means their mother taught them, well before the invention of Skype.

Before their father’s death, Fabrice had been a bubbly, bright little boy and Cecilia the more reserved of the pair of them; after the accident, he became shy and withdrawn, keeping to himself in his daycare and classes thereafter while Cecilia thrived in her new enviroment. He became serious and studious, throwing himself into his schoolwork while she balanced schoolwork and a blossoming social life. Meanwhile, Fabrice took to learning various kinds of charms and became fascinated with magical creatures of every variety. But especially the cute-yet-deadly ones.

Fabrice grew up with his mother, sister, and their two cats, Isis and Cleopatra, who also served as familiars to the family. His interactions with the cats made him realize his own love of animals and thus, the direction in which he focused his magical abilities. He went to school like everyone else, but his mother saw to his magical education at home, and when he was old enough, she began taking her with him to work, in part to help teach him, but mostly to distract him from his sister being away so much.

Sarah shared her husband’s suspicions of Violet, but they often visited their wealthier cousins like a normal family to keep up appearances. Fabrice became close with all of his cousins. They played together and exchanged spell secrets. It became easy to ignore the tense, awkward elephant in the room until it was too large not to notice. Violet soon turned her political ambitions on Fabrice, which frightened him greatly, but thankfully he managed to go off to college to pursue a degree in veterinary sciences. After the death of her husband, Sarah became much less polite to Violet, especially in regards to her children.

While Fabrice threw himself into his pursuit of animals, his twin found her way into the limelight through modeling. He supported her all the way, making sure to buy the magazines with her photos and her other projects. This led to him being teased, but to Fabrice, all the nasty remarks he endured were worth it for his sister.

And when Cecilia broke down, Fabric and his mother both dropped everything to be at her side in a French hospital. Fabrice sensed his sister had been unhappy through their correspondence, and he felt guilty for not doing more during their visit. However, their family reunion helped for them all to figure out how to go on from there, and Fabrice happily encouraged Cecilia to continue her education, magical and otherwise, when she quit modeling as a career.

As for himself, after graduating with honors, Fabrice now works with his mother at the Siren Cove Zoo, tending to animals and making sure they are living comfortably. He lives on his own in a small cottage on the same street as his mother, to whom he is very close and very protective of. He keeps in contact with Cecilia regularly; he understands better now their family history.

On his way home from a late night shift, Fabrice was jumped and thought to have been stabbed, according to the papers. In truth, he was magically attacked by his aunt, Violet, and as a result, bears an ugly, purple mark across his chest that will never fully fade, even in spite of the glamors he casts on it. Cecilia came home, of course, as soon as this happened; Fabrice appreciated having her home, but as soon as he recovered enough, he insisted on her returning to Oxford.

Fabrice is returning to Siren Cove after a roughly seven month research trip on behalf of Siren Cove Zoo out in California. While out there, he wound up in a drunken debate with an especially peeved witch, who thereafter cursed him so that he now shapeshifts into his deer form whenever he becomes especially nervous. He is still working on breaking this curse when he returns home

PERSONALITY: If Cecilia is the social butterfly of the family, Fabrice is the tempered breeze; quiet, but still a force in his own way. Fabrice is a shy, withdrawn fellow who tends to prefer the company of animals to humans, much to his sister’s chagrin. He is very protective of Cecelia, his mother and his cousins, and he is wary of the dark past of his own family; he loves his family and he would do anything for them. (Especially Cecilia, for whom he will get into fights he cannot win.) He wants those he cares about to be happy above anything else, including, oftentimes, his own happiness.

He is an avid reader who is especially fond of history, and he loves spending nights at home with his pets by his side in front of a warm fire. He loves magic and learning new spells; currently, he is focusing on how to lift his curse and studying runes.

To those who don’t know him, Fabrice appears nervous and unsure of himself at first glance; he lacks his sister’s social graces. However, within the past few months of his time away from Siren Cove, he has grown more confident. He still fears that letting himself get to close to people will only cause pain and suffering, a belief only further emphasized by his father’s death and the end of Cecilia’s modeling career, but not as much as he once did. Mostly, he is fascinated by people and wants to meet new friends, in spite of his shyness. Fabrice spends a lot of his free time dreaming about possibilities and the ‘what-ifs’ of life. When he does spend time in town, he spends most of it people watching.

Because of his sheltered upbringing and the fact that he has never really addressed what the loss of his father and uncle mean to him, Fabrice tends to bottle his emotions inside of himself until he reaches a point where he can’t contain them anymore. Ever since his own accident, he hasn’t been sleeping well, relying on sleeping draughts when he makes a more thorough attempt.

He can be socially awkward, and he detests confrontations and arguments. He has no sense of self-preservation, as Cecilia can well attest to from all the times he’s dragged her off to examine some lovely yet dangerous magical creature. He can be stubborn in his own way; like his father before him, his opinions tend to land him in trouble sometimes.

Much to Cecilia’s dismay, Fabrice really doesn’t know how to dress himself outside of his work uniform, so he tends to draw attention to himself in his mismatching outfits when he goes out.

OPINION OF THE RIVALRY: Fabrice and Cecilia grew up with the rivalry the same way Moira and her siblings did. However, his mother never dwelt much on it, insisting that Fabrice and Cecilia should not have to base their lives around a “ridiculous, centuries old grudge.” Yet, as an avid reader, Fabrice couldn’t help but look into it through his books. After everything he’s been through, Fabrice believes in the rivalry, but also that it is harmful to the town. Like Moira, he yearns for peace throughout the town. He dislikes the town’s politics, and he is especially distrustful of the way James Thornton is constantly arresting his cousin, but he is civil and polite to everyone regardless, the way his mother taught him to be. If pressed, like his sister, he will choose the side of the witches, because of his family.

LIFESTYLE: Fabrice lives in a small cottage on the same street as his mother, more in the woods surrounding Siren Cove than in the actual town. He owns three cats, Clotho, Lachesis, and Atropos, all female and named for the Fates in Greek mythology. These cats, like Isis and Cleopatra from his childhood, are familiars for him, and thus, have an extended lifespan and tend to have magical properties of their own, in that their presence elevates Fabrice’s powers when he’s working with magic. All three cats typically accompany Fabrice to his walks in the park and thus why some people refer to him as “the crazy cat Coombs.”

He has a terrible sense of fashion, even with Cecilia and his mother both trying to help him out in their own ways. He just has no patience for it, and he tends to fidget when anyone tries to fix his wardrobe. With his sleeping troubles, he has something of an addiction to caffeine, and whenever he is in town, with or without his cats, he has a cup of coffee in one hand as well.

When he isn’t working at the zoo, Fabrice tends to walk through the woods by his house, visit with his mother, Cecilia, or cousins, and people watch in the park. He struggles with wanting to seek love for himself, hopeless romantic that he is, and so he tends to daydream a lot, which often proves hazardous for himself.

He also frequently goes out exploring in search for magical creatures. Nearly always, he drags Cecilia along with him. He is especially fond of the creatures that could easily kill him.

Socially awkward as he is, Fabrice still does dream of reaching out and finding friendships, perhaps even a relationship, if he can ever get over his shyness. He has some experience with romance, and he has experienced various attractions over the years, to all kinds of people. Fabrice is quietly, openly bisexual; he came out to his mother and sister when he was fourteen, and they both have been nothing but supportive of him. In turn, Fabrice is supportive and protective of Cecilia and her own struggles with her sexuality. He encourages her the best he can without pushing her; he wants her to be happy, more than anything else.

HUMAN, WITCH, OR SIREN: Witch. Fabrice is a Coombs, and thus hails from a long line of witches. He specializes in magic that involves animals, usually healing them. As such, he is skilled with herbs, potions, and charms. He also has skills with magic for the purpose of helping people relax and to cheer them up. Like Moira, he can also transform himself into an animal at will, his animal of choice a white tail deer, rather than a cat. Fabrice lacks in offensive magic, and his defensive skills aren’t much better. Ever since his attack, however, he wants to and has been studying to improve both.
